What do the aliens have to do with that story? “If I hadn’t spent so much time studying Earthlings,” said the Tralfamadorian, “I wouldn’t have any idea what was meant by ‘free will.’ I’ve visited thirty-one inhabited planets in the universe, and I have studied reports on one hundred more. Only on Earth is there any talk of free will.” How do they play a role in the story and the time travel aspect of the story?
I think the aliens have a significant role in the story. Their thinking concepts, such as with death, has a big impact on Billy (which is our main character). Without them, I feel like the whole story wouldn't have a structure because so much of it, if not all of it, is based on the idea of time travelling to different incidents in Billy's life. As for their exact role in the book, that's difficult to say. Perhaps, it is to make it an easier, more comprehensible way to time travel without simply saying that Billy jumped into another time?
